HMmmmmm ---------
When I first started panning back in the summer of '66 the US Government's fixed price for Gold was $35 / oz and private ownership of refined Gold, say a Gold bar or Gold coinage, was unlawful. Big time Gold smugglers would somehow get their Gold to Europe (Switzerland) which was illegal on top of illegal and would get $200 USD for that same ounce.
Of course a large take out pizza in Anchorage back then was $3.00, a carton of cigarettes was $3.50, you could smoke anywhere, except in church of course, as well as smoking on all commercial flights.
And so there I was working unbelievably long hours of overtime at seasonal construction wages ( $3.63 / hr straight time). In that late fall of '67 my last 2 week, pre-tax, paycheck before going into the Air Force was $1,000. Things were a lot different things way back in those olden days, especially compared to the craziness today.
I just got a retired military discounted haircut this afternoon for $18 and it used to cost a buck in the 60s.
