Pioneer Pumps

Hi guys, looking at some 6 inch pumps coming up at auction. There are a couple Pioneers, some Cornells and some Gormun Rupps. Does anyone have any recommendations or first hand experience with these types of pumps? (Reliability, parts availability, repair part costs etc) The engine drives are mostly Deere with a few Duetz.

Most of those are engineered for irrigation volume, not pressure.

I have a number of Gorman Rupp pumps, 3,4 and 6". They are a solid pump and I never had trouble getting parts.
The 4" is powered by a Lister diesel and the 6" is a Duetz.
I also have a 6" Wacker pump with Lombardini diesel, those engine parts are available but expensive!
Like Glenn said, most of those are trash pumps. Not made for high pressure but they work great for mining pumps where recycling water is a must.

The only high pressure pump I have is a 6x8 Mission pump w/ Detroit diesel.

You can't go wrong with a Gorman Rupp, in my opinion and the air cooled Duetz are great engines.

Thanks, Chickenminer. That is exactly the real world feedback I was looking for! Recycling water will definitely be a requirement of the pump.

Dick, is that a 6x8x10 pump (10 inch diameter)? If so, it delivers 1600-1800gpm @ 60psi but takes 70+ hp to turn it. Using it to supply your wash plant?

I have it’s big brother: 6x8x13. A refugee from the oil patch. 2800gpm @60psi feeding two different irrigation systems. Takes a 200 hp electric motor to turn it.

Although not real economical, recent local drought has forced me to learn about moving water long distances. The best I have found is a Moyno screw pump that rotates in a rubber sleeve. I am feeding a 5 inch lay flat hose 3 miles long with 200psi and 350 gpm. Tht’s Near my hose rating

No it's 8" suction, 6" output. Powered with a 4 cylinder Detroit diesel.
Only been using it to lift water to a pond on high bench.
For the wash plant I use the trash pumps because of recycling. The GR trash pumps give
plenty of pressure for a wash plant as long as the head isn't too great.

Cool info. The one I am looking at is the 14C2-F3L model with a 3 cyl Duetz. Should be perfect upgrade from the Hondas I am using now.

Dick, mission makes a 6x8 pump with either a curved cup 10 inch impeller or a 13 inch straight vane impeller. The straight vane passes small rocks easier without blocking the impeller. The 10 inch usually has a rubber-lined volute

I had to switch my power from 200 hp electric to 4-cyl diesel and back off the speed. It was over-pressuring my 5 inch hose. That stuff is too expensive to rupture needlessly. Especially in 1000 foot rolls.

It's a motor and a pump! That's it...

Used? Well, look at the possible problems! engine condition? Pump condition?

Gorman pumps have a GREAT reputation! Pioneer? I would buy one in a second!

Slatco, Your question is very well posed... However, I will state for the record, you can get three different opinions and end up with MORE questions than answers!

Auctions are my favorite place to buy... The challenge is doing as much due diligence as possible on the item before you "jump in"!


Engines can be replaced or repaired... Pumps can be replaced or repaired. If the price is right, you took into consideration the "cost side" of repairs.

Pressure (force) and Volume is regulated by pump RPM... Jeez Guys!

Your wash plant design dictates the pump capacity required! Using the Clarkson standard of 15 percent solids in your slurry - work out the VOLUME of water you need for the number of cubic yards passing through the screen - not OVER the screen. It's another calculation.
