The same sort of thing happened to a friend of mine a while back.
Metal detecting in a remote area he suddenly had a strong hit and he then dug up a small "cache" of gold Dore bars.
After dutifully researching historical records without any hint of sucess he 'reluctently' stored them away for future study. He never mentioned having made any official news releases - I suspect something or other to do with personal safety.
Of course that was years ago, so by now the story probably has come to a quiet, unresolved, end.
