CLEANUPS - Questions, Answers, Opinions and ...........
The following is a quote from "Prospecting AK" from another string:
"... One thing that was mentioned was cleanup. I have found flakes and I did my best to clean em up. I have no real experience doing any cleanups and was curious where a good place to start would be? Magnets, blue bowls, spiral wheels ...................
need some advice on where to spend my money and get setup well the first time...!!"
Anybody have some thoughts???

Besides the excellent, extensive info that Geowiz has shared, personally I find that my vortex drop riffle sluice works real well for processing large volumes of concentrates quickly. You can essentially get clean gold out of the top section of the sluice and save the remainder for when you have time to finish at home.

Slatco,
The vortex sluice is a novel idea. Can you share more info on how you clean the sluice?

Re: CLEANUPS - Questions, Answers, Opinions and ...........
For any mining or even prospecting operation the cleanup is where the rubber meets the road. Having said this I would maintain that the cleanup could be seen as the most important part of any kind of mining endeavor. It is what determines whether more exploration and effort should be expended, but it also determines whether the ground you are working is viable, the methods you use are viable, or even if you are losing gold through incorrect sampling, mining or even the cleanup processes itself.
Cleanup then is highly situational in that; how you go about it, the tools and equipment you use, the ground you work, the composition of material you recover and the time you expend all depend on your own situation. It would be fair to say that a "one size fits all" attitude will not work in every situation. Cleanups done correctly will always be a reflection of your own operation and knowledge regarding it, as well as your own level of expertise.
Cleanup devices are a whole subject in and of themselves. They are very diverse and each will have its own benefits and detractions. But suffice to say that there is no cleanup device more crucial to good gold recovery than the person actually doing the work.
Having said all of that I will leave cleanup devices for further discussion. I have my own preferences as well as opinions, which I may go into as time goes on, but would like to hear others input on this important subject of cleanups for now.

Kinda hard to explain, how about I take a video next time I am out and you can see the method I use.

Slatco...
Are you talking about the Devin gold vortex drop riffles ?
I have been thinking about buying some of his riffles to build a
cleanup sluice to try.
How do they work for the various gold sizes in your observation?

Re: CLEANUPS - Questions, Answers, Opinions and ...........
Hi Dick, that is what I have- Devin gold sluice. I have the prospector series but have also used the Klondike series. For the gold I am in which is flat flake, I have found it works the fastest for processing sluice box cons. Since Geo asked earlier and now you as well I will try and give a little run down of my cleanups.
Call me crazy but I typically only run for two to three hours consecutively before I shut down. This is due to numerous factors- sluciebox loading due to not enough water (hence the bigger pump shopping), fueling requirements of pumps and trommel, fueling requirements of operator lol, tailings management, boredom, excitement to see gold in the box etc, etc. The portion of my sluice I cleanup is 3ft wide by 6ft long with angle irons riffles over miners moss so at the end of the day I probably have 20-25 gallons of concentrate.
Since the ground I am in does not have large nuggets, I run the cons through a 1/4" classifier and then into the Devin sluice. I then fire up the pump for the Devin sluice (I use a 2" Honda at about half throttle) set a 7 degree angle and feed away. It takes me about 2 beer (45 minutes) to process the cons (less when I was using the larger/wider Klondike sluice). If the ground has gold in it, the top riffle sections will slowly start to trap more gold and push the blacksand and other material out. At the end of the run if you had a good day, the top three riffles will be primarily gold. To cleanup the sluice, you shut the water off, place a pail under the collection trough and then tip the sluice vertical. It is hinged and now all the material in the cleanup sluice can be washed into the collection trough. I generally wash the bottom 80% of the sluice out and into a pail that I save for later (I usually bring all the bottom 80% out and deal with when I am at home and have time and not at the minesite). The tops 20% contains the majority of the gold and by performing a up and down motion with a small garden hose in the V of the collection trough you can wash off any remaining sand and just be left with pure gold. (Hard to explain and this is what I will attempt to video next trip out) The gold is usually so clean after this step it can go right to the scale after drying. I really like this method as I have a really accurate idea of what my ground is doing on a daily basis and I can change things up for the next day based on this info if I need to.
I stick my LeTrap sluice after the end of the Devin and at most it will have only 5-10 pieces in it after running that much concentrate.
To summarize, for the gold I am in which is mostly flat flake around 20 mesh and the way I have my op setup, the Devin sluice is the most efficient cleanup device I have found to date. (I have tried the LeTrap, the Gold cube, the Wheel and they were all slower)

Re: CLEANUPS - Questions, Answers, Opinions and ...........
I'm with you, one of the best and cheapest methods for improved recovery is cleaning the box often. I never go longer than 6-8 hrs.
How does the Devin sluice work on very fine gold, -40 mesh and smaller? Bulk of my gold is -20 mesh and a significant % is -40 mesh. The Gold Cube works well for me in that fraction range, followed by running through an old Gold Hound wheel.
Understand about the cleanup procedure in the V trough. Same principle as back in the days when we had 50' of sluice box with 2" angle iron riffles! We would do the majority of the cleanup in the main box using a 'paddling' method.
You have piqued my interest in the Devin system again. Might have to give it a try next summer.

Dick
You made me laugh!! Where I prospect in Colorado I count the + 30 mesh "nuggets" I find. Can't wait to get up to AK! The bulk of my gold is-100 with plenty of that -150. I think ya'll should challenge Texas for the whole everything is bigger saying.
If I wasn't so dumb I would attach the picture of my "nugget" from my last trip, that baby was a plus 30 and you could see texture on it.
One mans trash is another mans treasure!!
Easy goer
