Wiz... if you look closer it does indeed have a chimney. 6" piece of hydraulic pipe sticking out of the top in the back.
From my observation I would say it has most definitely been used.

If I'd have looked closer, I'd have seen the pipe too! Thanks for pointing that out as it demystifies the mystery of how the furnace was vented I believe (I wasn't bright enough to see it the first time around, but as you had boots on the ground, you already knew, so thanks for the explanation.).
