Now, for me, this begins to make sense. Especially where you said this: "use a degree of judgement in what we make decisions on."
This is exactly what we do when using a hand held detector, we use a degree of judgement based on what we know about our particular detector; its abilities, limitations and even its quirks.
Now it just becomes me to gain experience in the actual process of interpretation of what the data is showing me.
