Mushroom picker?
Hi Guys and Gals,
There is a prospecting personality that I have knowledge of and would like to introduce...
His Name is Shawn Ryan.
http://www.earthexplorer.com/featured/Shawn_Ryan.asp
Shawn Ryan sets an example of what is possible when a prospector is willing to get up early, put his boots on and go out into remote areas seeking GOLD.
His work is worthy of discussion here and should provide inspiration to us all.

Re: Mushroom picker?
The subject of Shawn Ryan should be an interesting discussion. Even more interesting would be if we could get him on the forum.

Re: Mushroom picker?
I have thought of drones for exploration recently, especially considering my decreased mobility. Every time I leave my house and drive down the road I think of this. This is because last summer the CalTrans workers used heavy equipment to move all the loose material from a steep hillside abutting the road that was susceptible to slides in the rain. They scrapped it right down to the bedrock.The river runs parallel to the road and in many places old river channel can be seen from it.Geowizard wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 4:17 pmDrones;

I can look up there from the road and see what I believe to be the ancient Klamath River bed. It would be great to be able to sample and/or metal detect and see if it actually is an old bench. Alas, these legs won't allow for a steep hike such as this, but would make for a perfect drone flight.
I have a friend here that is actively working one of these ancient river channels, he does quite well with it.

Re: Mushroom picker?
Jim,
I am sympathetic about your plight, personally.
We humans are limited to some degree through-out our lives in terms of strength, agility and our ability to soar over large areas. Would be nice to have wings!
The development of Drone technology continues but within certain limits...
Drones have a limited "payload". They can only LIFT a limited amount of weight.
Payload capacity to date only includes a camera. There are a few Drones that can carry a small cesium vapor magnetometer.

Time on station;
Drones get POWER from a battery pack...
A battery pack has a limited capacity to store energy. Larger batteries having larger capacity WEIGH MORE.
"Time on station" refers to the time that a Drone can remain over a given survey area. The amount of flight time outbound and inbound is subtracted from the total possible flight time.

Re: Mushroom picker?
I guess I was thinking more of the type of drone that is like a helicopter with the ability to hover instead of just an in and out flight.
But in thinking about it I think this would just frustrate me even more than my inability to access such places because even though I may be able to actually see the bench, there is still no way I could personally access it on foot.

Drones that Hover;
Jim, These Drones can hover;
The frustration for most is the cost versus performance...
The common low cost drone will fly for an average of 20 to 25 minutes.
Here's one that will fly for 31 minutes...

Fixed wing Drones;
Fixed Wing Drones fly like an airplane. They require forward motion to create LIFT.
The Drone used by Ground Truth Exploration is a Fixed Wing Drone.
