Fine GOLD recovery;

Having tried other methods, I like the Blue Bowl.

Here is a link to instructions for the Blue Bowl: https://j.b5z.net/i/u/2089773/f/6823_Bl ... ctions.pdf

Keep your "rejects";

Early in my experience with the Blue Bowl, I made a surprising discovery!

I ran a five gallon bucket of Placer GOLD concentrates that had been screened to 16 mesh...

The reject bucket was full - almost overflowing. I shut down the Blue Bowl and removed it from the reject bucket...

Right in the middle, on top of the reject was about an ounce of very fine GOLD! :o

After spooning up the fine GOLD, I screened the reject to 40 mesh. I recovered another two ounces of GOLD that had blown out of the Blue Bowl earlier because it was less weight than the 16 mesh reject.

Keep your reject and keep on screening down to get that FINE GOLD. :)

Don't throw out the reject;

Don't throw out the reject like I once did...

Well, I thought I had recovered ALL of the GOLD... I paved my drive way. :o

A little later in the game, I was advised to have my reject assayed. The assay came back at 73 ounces of GOLD per ton. Now, keep in mind, that's concentrate reject. It might take a couple of seasons to accumulate 2000 pounds of reject cons. Then there's shipping to the refiner. :)

But that 73 ounces per ton of assayed gold was not an accurate assay because it was a concentrated sample. In other words by it being concentrated it was not like a grab sample, but instead by being concentrated it was contaminated by what we call nugget effect. To avoid being influenced by nugget effect our sample must always be random, or as terned in the industry, a grab sample.

Jim,

This concentrate was the end product of washing 1000 cubic yards of material through a wash plant. It represented an effective multiplication of x 10,000. (2,000,000 lbs/200 lbs)

The number of cubic yards required to produce a ton of concentrate would be 10,000 to 20,000 cubic yards. :)

Concentrate vs Grab Sample;

A "Grab" sample is a single sample selected at random. In most cases held in one's hand. A single, small sample is prone to "nugget effect"because it is possible that by random chance, a nugget is contained within.

"Concentrate" is the result of recovering small amounts of GOLD contained in thousands of cubic yards of gravel and sand. There is rarely "nugget effect" in a large volume sample. :)

Assay of "reject";

After cleanup, the remaining concentrate is referred to as "reject".

The "reject" material by definition. having had the GOLD removed, would be discarded... :o

Because ALL of the GOLD is never recovered in the cleanup process, it is very important to obtain an assay of the reject to determine the amount of GOLD that remains and would otherwise be discarded. :)

Tailings;

Tailing piles result from stacking the alluvial gravels that were washed through a Sluice Box. A drag line was used to scrape up and stack the gravel as it collected at the end of the sluice box.

The Tailing piles that I mine at Ophir contain residual GOLD that was NOT recovered in the sluice box...

I estimate there are 7,000,000 cubic yards of tailing piles at Ophir.

Having mined the tailing piles for about ten years, I have been able to get a good idea of the average amount of GOLD contained in the tailing piles. :)

I heard of a guy that had a sample of his tailing pile assayed..... came back at 15+ grams per ton....
I tried to contact his since he was having difficulty capturing the fine gold and offered my assistance.
I have not heard back from him ...... Too bad because I can capture fine gold and this could have been a golden opportunity for the both of us.

Saved reject cons;

I probably have a ton of reject cons that I have saved...

There's a point of diminishing returns when trying to mine and do cleanup. It's hard to run both operations at the same time. The priority has to be keeping the wash plant running. As a result, the reject cons begin to build up. :)
