Re: Ice Cold GOLD?
I guess we all have "really cold" stories of our own - mine being the winter of 66-67 where at Mendeltna Creek (it's now called just "Mendeltna" and still found where it always had been at mile 153 of the Glenn) it was down to -151 for a few nights. The big thing is that that was air temperature. No...

Re: Operational improvements for improving hand mining (highbanking) efficiency - Lean Manufacturing style
One thing that comes to mind is the idea of "circles" (a moving excavation / settling /tailing pit) Dig for a certain interval (lets say 2 or even just 1 day or so) and discharge your new tailings to the side of your new excavation. Then start moving the digging in a circular direction while using y...

Re: Spring hauling to new prospect
It sure is nice to see (and learn) from you "Big Boy Pants" guys about this. At my operation I have to haul my "stuff" sometimes as much as 20 yards from the Polaris six wheeler to "The Spot". All those round trips to hand carry the highbanker, Honda 2" pump, 2.5 gal portable fuel container, True Te...

Re: Properties of punch plate (or Jarvine Riffle) for improving gold capture
So ............ Which comes first - the chicken ( with "documented evidence and proof" beyond reproach) or the egg (something new that the inventor makes certain claims as to recovery improvements)? Ever use extruded or cast rubber mats? Who decided to try them, found them to be VERY good at recover...

Re: Soil samples for placer indication
"For what it's worth I have had a company that was prospecting in the area for hardrock deposits ask permission to do soils on my claims. While some of the samples came back an anomaly none threw up any big red flags." Dick, I have seen the same sort of thing happen at a friend's claim a few years ...

Robin Grayson - or SteppeGold as he was known here - is a "Blast from the Past" for us old timers who faithfully read and re-read all his postings. He is a British born Geologist who (back a few years ago at least) lived with his family in Mongolia and worked in many different locations in many diff...

Pickaxe,
One other aspect of the punch plate is that it shears off almost all the down stream force of the water/slurry and redirects only some of the flow downward to slowly wash the undersized material from around the denser Gold.

Re: Properties of punch plate (or Jarvine Riffle) for improving gold capture
Just as GWiz has many, many years of experience doing these old things using his rewarding, traditional, ways, many of us only see those old ways as just OLD, inefficiently developed things that came about from the random efforts of desperate and usually unskilled novices. Nowadays we evaluate those...

Re: Is drift mining a practical way to mine nowadays?
Here are two guys working in interior Alaska who are dropping a shaft this winter. Something those who are interested in drift mining might find interesting.
