I've done the same, only not for traction. I have used wood stove ashes, which also attract the sun's heat and melt through ice nicely.. They serve well as a low (no) cost ice melting agent.

Chuck, your post on Oxbows reminded me of my time in Alaska, at a time when I didn't know much about gold or recovery. Where I was on the East Fork, there were a lot of old Oxbows, but I never even thought about dredging in them for gold. It was only after the fact, like now, that I remember back to...
