Re: Test trommel

Well that heavy of a barrel can take the abuse for sure. I really dislike using a grizzly but sometimes it is a necessity. All depends on the ground. I have around 6,000 yds through this test plant of mine w/o a grizzly but I can see it is taking a toll on the drum. Although the drum is only 1/4" ma...

Re: Test trommel

Sweet! Looks like a good start. What gauge is the barrel made of?
You planning some sort of grizzly on that hopper?

Re: Spring hauling to new prospect

Always neat prospecting in a new area, especially one that had old workings! This is a drone view from last summer showing the bench area the oldtimers worked. https://www.chickenminer.com/images/LCdroneview.jpg Couple photos of on the ground view showing the old workings. https://www.chickenminer.c...

New prospect

I'll be prospecting a new little pup this summer so I had to move equipment and fuel this Spring. Just finished up so I'm getting itchy feet to start digging, especially with this high gold price. Some photos from the last few days.... Moving the small trommel test plant. https://www.chickenminer.co...

Re: Soil samples for placer indication

Just wondering if any of you guys have used soil sampling to find and then prove out a good placer prospect? So I guess the answer to your original question is no. While it seems like a good first indicator I sure would want to find a more proven definitive method of testing a placer deposit before...

Re: Soil samples for placer indication

Slatco, can't say I know any placer miners that use soil sampling for prospecting a placer deposit. But it seems a reasonable first step to take on new ground. You said the ground you are looking at " has not had much placer work done", but it did have some? Any idea of the depth to bedrock? Mining ...

No.... way cooler to me as a specimen. Might be the only sample I ever pick up!

Re: Small scale hard rock mining and prospecting

Several years ago I picked up this piece of float while stripping ground up on a high bench. I never could find where it came from and it was sheer luck that I happened to see this piece. I'm way more interested in placer deposits than pursuing hard rock but it was cool to find! https://www.chickenm...

The mining of gold at the hobbyist scale is a horrible business model, in my opinion, but it's a terrific hobby.
Too funny!
I know quite a few guys on the commercial side that would have to admit the same thing ! :)
